Christopher Lo, a Sacramento businessman and prominent activist in the Asian American community, died June 26 in a drowning accident at East Park Reservoir in Colusa County, according to the Colusa County Coroner's Office. He was 45.

Mr. Lo was active in civic and cultural groups. He reached out to the Hmong community as a board member of the Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs Association, or APAPA.

He served on the board of the Hmong Women's Heritage Association and belonged to the Sacramento Hmong Alliance Church. He was on the national boards of Hmong National Development and Lo-Pha Society.

"Chris was definitely an up-and-coming leader in the Hmong community," APAPA Vice President Tom Bhe said. "He was looking into running for elective office."

Mr. Lo operated an independent insurance and financial services office in Sacramento before becoming a State Farm insurance agent 10 years ago. He was active in business groups, including the Sacramento Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, Sacramento Asian Chamber of Commerce and Stockton Boulevard Partnership.

Born in 1966 in Laos, Mr. Lo immigrated to the United States with his family in 1976 and lived in Denver and Stockton before settling in Sacramento. He graduated from Berea College in Kentucky and earned a master of business administration degree from the University of Minnesota.

Survivors include his wife, Mai Ngia of Sacramento; parents, Teng and Khou of Sacramento; brothers, Choua Va of Stockton, Chu Pheng of Iraq and Chu Feng of Los Angeles; sisters, Maily, Pahoua and Nue Nelson, all of Sacramento; and five children.

A memorial service is set for 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday through July 18 at Sacramento Funeral Chapel, 6500 Freeport Blvd., Sacramento. A memorial website may be viewed at www.ilasting.com/christopherlo.php.
