Let's take a quick detour from the grapes and get down with a little agave. National Tequila Day will be celebrated Sunday, so think of it as a chance to savor tequila without the Cinco de Mayo distractions of faux sombreros and mariachi overload.

Sacramento's certainly a tequila kind of town. In midtown alone, you'll find thoughtful tequila programs at Azul Mexican Food and Tequila Bar (1050 20th St.), the recently opened Tequila Museo Mayahuel (12th and K streets), Zócalo (1801 Capitol Ave.) and Centro Cocina Mexicana (2730 J St.). To "Wine Buzz's " taste buds, nothing beats a smooth and butterscotch-ish pour of Fortaleza reposado.

Out in Roseville, TRES Tequila Lounge & Mexican Kitchen (1182 Roseville Parkway) will be getting in on the fun early. Today from 6-9 p.m., TRES will be holding a patio party with Milagro tequila that includes unlimited tacos and "endless margaritas." TRES' tequila store will also be holding a sale on Sunday.

Tonight's tequila shindig costs $35, and bring a little extra cash for a cab ride home or to buy dinner for your designated driver. For more information: (916) 782-4455.

Winemaking 101

Ever wanted to make your own vino? Well, here's your chance with the Sacramento Home WineMakers club. From 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 6, you'll learn the basics of making red and white wine, including an overview of equipment and supplies you'll need.

The class costs $15, but the fee will be waived if you join the Sacramento Home WineMakers club, which costs $42 for a new membership. Information: (916) 327-1260 or www.sachomewine.org.

Wining and reading

Sometimes, there's nothing like a glass of wine and a good book to decompress from the daily rat race. Both these pleasures will be celebrated at tonight's "Wine and Sign" event, which features local wines and local authors. The wine tasting will feature Lava Cap Winery, Mount Aukum Winery, Colibri Ridge Winery and Boeger Winery. On the literary end, you'll meet Cindy Sample, Debbie Preston and Gaelyn Whitley Keith.

The event runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the California Welcome Center (2085 Vine St. #105, El Dorado Hills). Information: (916) 358-3700.
