Helping Others: Luxe for Life to aid Sacramento Children's Home

Published: Wednesday, Jul. 27, 2011 - 12:00 am | Page 4E

What: Luxe for Life, described as a "memorable night to benefit the Sacramento Children's Home."

When: Aug. 13.

Where: The Aerospace Museum of California at McClellan Park.

How much: $85 individual, $300 jet set couple package, $2,500 first class boarding pass; creative sponsor packages may still be available. Visit www.kidshome.org or call (916) 290-8199.

What to expect: A Las Vegas nightclub setting, trendy and hip, with cocktails, tasty nibbles, live entertainment and the Objects of Desire silent and live auctions.

Special guest: David Garibaldi, a performance artist who paints artwork in a matter of 10 minutes per painting. A philanthropist, Garibaldi travels all over the world donating his services for events including Luxe for Life. Garibaldi's goal is to raise a million dollars for charity by the time he is 30. Current figure: $700,000.

Just for fun: Step into a flight simulator to "fly" your own plane. And tour the vintage aircraft on display.

The reason: To support the mission of the home, which is committed to helping build strong families, to opening doors to the future, to maximizing potential and ending the cycle of child abuse. Established in 1867, the home has community-based, residential and educational programs addressing the issues of children, newborn to 21, and range from child abuse and parenting education to acute trauma treatment.

Featured volunteer: From the first impression of Sharon D'Arelli, one might think she has no time to volunteer for anything. Consider that she works two jobs, one as a court reporter and the other selling real estate, has a 17-year-old daughter and a husband. But she volunteers, too.

The reason? "I love doing volunteer work and I am enjoying watching Luxe for Life grow," she said. "It all started four years ago with five of us sitting around a table thinking of fundraisers. This is a great event and it raises a lot of money for the Children's Home. And it reaches out to a new audience of supporters. We have people from their 20s to their 70s and everyone has a great time."

D'Arelli says that she has fallen into the auction part of the planning. "I love being a people person and seeking auction items and spreading the word on ticket sales. We have a plethora of items, but one big one is from Red Hawk Casino and it includes a limo, dinner and more, including an overnight in a bed and breakfast."

This is the first time for Luxe to be held at the Aerospace Museum. "It is more exciting to be in a new place," said D'Arelli.

She is delighted that her daughter will be a freshman at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. "We look forward to going to visit in San Luis Obispo," said D'Arelli, who believes that every day is full of surprises.
