Hours: 11 a.m.-midnight Sunday-Thursday, 11 a.m.- 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday

Happy hour: 3-6 p.m. Monday through Friday and late night 10 p.m.-close Sunday through Wednesday

The real steal: Chicken lettuce wraps and other half-priced appetizers run $3-$6, while four-cheese pizzas and other pies cost $6-$7 each. Add a domestic pint for $3.50 or craft or import beer for $4.25-$4.75.

The vibe: Inside the brick restaurant, you'll find people smiling and talking over stacks of onion rings, half-yard beers and colorful cocktails. Multiple televisions play indoors and on the outdoor patio. Substitute appetizer and drink watching for people watching as servers dash back and forth carrying trays that make you think: "What's that?"

Signature drink: Yard House is famous for its beers, so why not try one of the house beers brewed up by Firestone Walker Brewing Co. in Paso Robles. Or, sample the fruity, complex Belgian Amber Tripel created by Brasserie de Silly, an artisanal Belgian brewery founded in 1850. For a grown-up twist on a childhood treat, sample the Draft Beer Float, always priced at $6.95.

Bathroom break: Freshen up in the spacious and modern bathroom. Without the long line, you can get back to your food, drinks and friends faster.

Alternative libations: If beer is not your drink of choice, then sample a House Martini for $6, well drinks for $4.25-$4.75, or wine by the glass for $2 less than the normal price. If you're counting calories instead of dollar bills, Yard House is offering a line of Fresh & Skinny cocktails with 176 calories or less. They are $8.95 to $10.25. The Juniper Fusion, for instance, features Hendrick's Gin, fresh strawberries, sliced cucumbers and orange bitters, and the Skinny Margarita has 1800 Silver Tequila and lime.

Something extra: There's a tree planted in the middle of the patio, making you feel as though you've escaped the concrete jungle. The many TVs, though, serve as a reminder that you're still in the middle of an urban space.
