Did full moon help Sutter Memorial deliver nearly a baby every hour?

Sacramento's baby hospital – Sutter Memorial on F Street – delivered 45 babies in 48 hours, officials said.

That could be a record for deliveries in 48 hours in Sacramento, hospital spokesman Gary Zavoral said in a news release. Sutter Memorial has delivered 325,000 babies since 1937.

What might have caused the baby boomlet? The hospital suggests the "lunar effect." In other words, Zavoral reported: Saturday night's full moon.

According to the news release, the moon's gravitational pull "can control a woman's body" the same way the moon's gravity controls tides.

"The human body is 80 percent water, after all. And, given that both menstruation and ovulation roughly follow a lunar cycle – occurring on a monthly basis – it doesn't seem too far off to think that the moon could have a say in childbirth as well," hospital officials said.
