Former Jesuit catcher signs with San Francisco Giants

Andrew Susac has put pen to reality now in fulfilling the first step of his dream come true.

The former Jesuit High School and Oregon State standout catcher on Monday night agreed to terms with the San Francisco Giants, signing a contract that granted him a $1.1 million bonus.

The second-round draft pick and a draft-eligible sophomore with the Beavers was rated by a number of evaluation sites as the top catcher in the college game. He had two years of eligibility remaining and had until 9 p.m. on Monday to sign before the deadline for college eligible players.

Susac excelled this spring for nationally ranked Oregon State despite missing 16 games with a broken hamate bone in his left hand. Before the injury, Susac hit a team-high .364 in 26 games.

Known for his leadership and tireless work ethic, Susac surely factors into the Giants long-term plans given the curious status of Giants catcher Buster Posey, out for the season with a horrific leg injury. Though Posey has said he wants to return to fulltime duty behind the plate, he could also be moved to first base next season to ensure long-term production.

Meanwhile, Bee Player of the Year J.D. Davis of Elk Grove High School broke off contract talks with the Tampa Bay Rays on Aug. 6 in announcing he would indeed attend Cal State Fullerton on scholarship. He said the deciding factor was when Fullerton coach Rick Vanderhook made a visit to his family's Elk Grove home.

Davis, an imposing specimen at 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds, hit .484 with 45 RBI and 38 runs scored for Elk Grove as a senior. He had nine home runs and 13 doubles. Davis became a national recruit - and a favorite for scouts across the country - as a junior when he was named the Cal-Hi Sports Junior of the Year, batting .486 with eight home runs and 60 RBI.

The slugger said he feels good about his decision and looks forward to the college experience. He reports to Fullerton today.

Susac said this summer that the college game was well worth the experience, giving him a chance to attend classes, make new friends, play top-level college ball and "grow as a man."
