Sacramento region awarded grants for water conservation, habitat restoration

The Sacramento region has been awarded $16 million in state grants for water-conservation and habitat-restoration projects.

The money, awarded by the state Department of Water Resources, comes from Proposition 84, a 2006 bond act approved by voters for water supply, flood- control and restoration projects.

The funds going to the Sacramento region are among the largest grants for a single region among $204 million awarded statewide Friday. The money will fund all or part of 15 projects in the capital region.

"There will be benefits around the entire region," said Rob Swartz, a principal project manager at the Sacramento Regional Water Authority, the applicant and administrator of the funds.

The region's projects include $1.5 million to switch a Sacramento Municipal Utility District co-generation power plant, in south Sacramento, from using potable cooling water to recycled sewage effluent. The $8 million project involves building a new pipeline and pump stations from the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District treatment plant.

About $1 million will go to install 840 residential water meters in the city of Sacramento, the Sacramento Suburban Water District and the Sacramento County Water Agency.

Another $1 million will pay for water-conservation programs, including conservation audits and a low-flow toilet-installation program that will target low-income and disadvantaged communities.

Habitat projects include $420,000 to restore 142 acres of floodplain habitat at the Cosumnes River Preserve and $1.4 million to restore riparian habitat on the American River just upstream of Discovery Park.
