Artest remains player to be named later

Just when it looked as if we could bid adios to Ron Artest forever, the Los Angeles court commissioner called traveling on the Lakers forward.

Literally.

Artest's petition to change his name to Metta World Peace was held up Friday because he had outstanding traffic violations.

Pay the fine, Ron-Ron. Peace comes at a price.

• HBO recently began it's "24/7 Mayweather/ Ortiz" weekly series leading up to Floyd Mayweather and Victor Ortiz's World Boxing Council welterweight title fight Sept. 17 in Las Vegas.

The series will no doubt cast the loud and legally troubled Mayweather as the villain and the fresh-faced Ortiz as the people's underdog.

Ortiz is a rags-to-riches story. You just can't help pulling for the kid. He grew up in a dysfunctional family in Kansas before making his way West and building a life for himself.

It's just going to make it that much tougher when Mayweather beats him like an egg.

Paging Manny Pacquiao.

• Giants fans may have the feeling they made a deal with the devil last fall.

If some guy name Lucifer wearing a "Let Timmy Toke" shirt said he could make the 2010 Giants into world champs in exchange for a painful 2011 season, you would have sold Willie Mays' soul for the swap.

Let's just hope it was a one-year deal.
