Opening: A Portrait of Frida

It seems as if people can't get enough of the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. Maybe it's because of her famously tempestuous marriage with painter Diego Rivera or her affair with Josephine Baker or maybe it was the affair with Leon Trotsky.

I think it's the unibrow and, of course, the unforgettable imagery of her somewhat self-centered but highly distinctive paintings. Kahlo, who died in 1954, has become a visually recognizable icon worldwide, second only to Bob Marley in unlicensed image representation.

"My reputation as an artist will not coincide with the cult of my personality," says Frida rather prophetically in the new play about her, called "Frida Kahlo."

Dr. Manuel Pickett directs the new production of Rubén Amavizca Murúa's dramatic collage with the Elly Award-winning Diana Mandujano as Frida and Richard Falcón as her husband, Diego Rivera. John Dryden, Mariana Seda and Valentina Portela round out the cast.

"Frida Kahlo" opens today and runs at 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays through Oct. 9. All shows are performed in English. At The Wilkerson Stage Theater, 1723 25th St., Sacramento. Tickets: $20 general; $15 students, seniors, and Teatro Espejo and Teatro Nagual members. Information: (916) 548-4435, www.teatronagual.com

Jazz fellowship

The versatile and respected young drummer and composer Brian Blade comes to the Mondavi Center on Oct. 1 in his regular gig with Wayne Shorter's brilliant quartet.

This month, though, Blade brings his own too-little-seen-and-heard group, the Fellowship Band, on a tour around Northern Californa – and predictably avoids the Sacramento area.

Still, you can easily see the distinctive ensemble of heady young players, including Chris Thomas, Myron Walden, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Melvin Butler, at a variety of venues.

Brian Blade's Fellowship Band plays at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center (www.kuumbwajazz.org) in Santa Cruz on Monday, Yoshi's Oakland (www.yoshis.com) Thursday and next Friday, and at the Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society in Half Moon Bay (www.bachddsoc.org) on Sept. 18.
