More than 70 people were displaced Sunday by two large apartment fires in Arden Arcade and Carmichael.
One person was reported injured, a man who lived in an apartment where fire broke out around 2 a.m. in the 2200 block of Watt Avenue in Arden Arcade.
The man sustained serious burn and trauma injuries, said Assistant Chief Scott Cockrum of the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department. He lived in the apartment where that fire is thought to have started.
Thirty units received fire, smoke or water damage, leaving 60 people without a place to stay, Cockrum said.
In Carmichael, 12 people were displaced by a fire that was reported around 2 p.m. at the Woodbridge Place apartment complex on El Camino Avenue near Walnut Avenue. Ten apartments were damaged, officials said.
The American Red Cross provided shelter Sunday to families displaced by both fires.
In Carmichael, Michelle Casillas' apartment received extensive water damage. She planned to stay at a friend's house for the immediate future.
"It happened so fast," she said, explaining that a neighbor alerted her to the fire and rushed her outside. "I'm in shock."
She said her renter's insurance lapsed on Saturday. But she said she wasn't upset and was thankful that neither she nor anyone else was hurt.
Many residents were visibly distraught as they watched crews from Sac Metro extinguish the blaze.
Elana Majewski came running up to the apartment complex in tears, uncertain what had happened to her unit or her neighbors because she had spent the night at a friend's house.
"I just want to know that everyone is OK," she said.
When Sac Metro arrived, the attic of the two-floor complex was engulfed in flames, along with several apartments, he said.
Firefighters contained the blaze within 30 minutes. The cause of the fire was under investigation, Cockrum said.
The department sent almost 30 vehicles and 65 firefighters to the three-alarm blaze. The Arden Arcade fire received a similar response from Sac Metro.
In Carmichael, Dauri Fox said she saw smoke streaming out of her neighbor's window when she called 911. The neighbor apparently wasn't home.
Fox then started knocking on doors and alerted residents to leave.
