The memories of Justin Butler came flashing back to Bear River co-coach Terry Logue and the Bruins players this week.

"We were watching game film of last year's game against Woodcreek, and there is Justin scoring our only touchdown," Logue said earlier in the week. "The emotions kind of hit everyone. It was his first touchdown."

It was at Woodcreek last season that Butler, a junior wide receiver-defensive back, played in his last game, a 35-7 Bruins loss.

Two days later, Butler died from accidental self-asphyxiation.

Friday in Lake of the Pines, with Butler's No. 8 on their helmets, his teammates honored his memory by rallying to defeat No. 15 Woodcreek 24-10 to climb to 4-0 and hand the Timberwolves (3-1) their first loss.

With Bear River trailing 10-7 at halftime, the Bruins' Jack Tortorici kicked a 30-yard field goal, and Devaughn Lofton and Jim Bamburg ran for touchdowns. Bear River's Harley Sauers also caught a 74-yard first-quarter touchdown pass from Bamburg, and Michael Raigoza had two interceptions.

"Looking back a year later on the situation, I'm still amazed at what our kids went through," Logue said. "These are kids in the prime of their lives having to deal for weeks with a tragedy. I'm really proud of how they handled it."

Butler is still listed on the Bruins' roster, and his jersey hangs in the locker room.

No. 2 Pleasant Grove 77, McNair 7 at Sheldon – Mark Jenkins rushed 147 yards for touchdowns of 1, 23 and 25 yards, and D.J. A week after outlasting Roseville 61-49, Folsom scored the game winner on fourth and 15 when Trosin hit J'Juan Muldrow for a 40-yard touchdown on a deep post route, the ball just clearing the safety.

Muldrow had 10 catches for 251 yards and sophomore Troy Knox 14 catches for 248 yards and a score. Trosin also ran for a touchdown.
