Jesuit pitcher James commits to Stanford

Jesuit pitcher Logan James has verbally committed to play baseball on scholarship at Stanford.

The 5-foot-10, 160-pound left-hander was 4-0 with a 2.69 ERA and had 50 strikeouts in 282/3 innings last season for the 25-9 Marauders.

James, who competed in the North-South series and Area Code Games this summer, is a Pacific-12 Conference-caliber pitcher with a big upside, according to Jesuit coach Joe Potulny.

"He's a stud academically," Potulny said. "Whatever he does as an athlete will be great, but he's someone who gets it done in the classroom. Stanford is a pretty good deal."

James will be the second player during Potulny's tenure to play for Stanford. Catcher Damien Alvarado played for the Cardinal from 1996 to 2000.

James is the third Marauders senior to verbally commit, joining shortstop Zach Green (Oregon State) and second baseman Louie Mejia (Pacific).

Scott returns to coach Oak Ridge basketball

After a five-year absence, Steve Scott has returned to coach an Oak Ridge boys basketball team that includes his son, Bryce Scott, the team's senior point guard standout who led the Trojans in scoring last season (18.7 points).

Scott, 54, led Oak Ridge to four Sierra Valley Conference titles and a CIF state Division II championship in 2005. He replaces Bob Christensen, who stepped down because of a change in his off-campus job.

• Allen Carlson has resigned as the Davis girls soccer coach after 14 seasons.

Carlson, 62, led the Blue Devils to four Sac-Joaquin Section Division I championships, including last spring, when the Blue Devils defeated rival St. Francis 1-0. Carlson's 1999 team (29-0-1) was ranked No. 1 in the country by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Rio Americano boys third in Roche polo

The Rio Americano and El Camino boys teams placed third and fifth, respectively, at the Scott Roche Memorial Water Polo tournament last weekend in Atherton.

Rio Americano lost 10-9 in the semifinals on a last-minute goal to eventual runners-up Menlo-Atherton, then rallied from a four-goal deficit to defeat De La Salle of Concord 11-10 in overtime for third place.

El Camino's only loss in four matches came 8-5 to eventual champion Menlo School, the host team. El Camino defeated Los Altos 11-8 in the fifth-place match.

Del Campo runner third at Woodbridge

Del Campo's Jordan Rushing finished third in the boys sweepstakes race of the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic on Saturday in Costa Mesa.

Rushing covered the 3.1-mile course in 14 minutes, 22 seconds. He finished behind C.J. Albertson (14:13) of Fresno's Buchanan and Bryan Guijarro (14:17) of Palmdale's Knight.
