Pleasant Grove delivers perfect performance

This is how smooth it was on all facets for the top-ranked Pleasant Grove Eagles on Friday night: even those packing instruments delivered a flawless effort.

A spirited rendition turned in by the school's marching band of "Hey Jude" at the half under the direction of Mike Souliere could have morphed into "Hey, Sacramento, we're officially back." Rolling right along since its one-point setback to Lincoln of Stockton in double overtime, Pleasant Grove devoured No. 8 Roseville 63-14 in a nonleague game at Sheldon that was expected to be a tussle to the finish.

It was close for about a moment before big plays at the result of superb line play set the tone and moved the Eagles to 4-1. The Eagles were so dominant on the offensive line under position coach Dale Ellingsworth that there were yards of free field for the backs, and once in the open field, they were a blur to the end zone. Colin Serne sprinted 51 yards for a score, Brandon Lewis went 82 , Mark Jenkins 21, 29 and 17 and D.J. Dunn 53.

So exasperated were the Roseville assistant coaches with head sets to breakdown the action on top of the press box, one good-naturedly muttered that maybe the Tigers can catch a break in the form of Eagles kicker Marcus White cramping up. The senior boomed all of his extra points and each of his kickoffs were deep into the end zone, yet another weapon to negate at Tigers team that came in averaging nearly 50 points.

That Pleasant Grove has recovered from the Lincoln loss and the season-ending loss of two key starters in Josh Adams and Shedric Allen speaks of the program's resolve and depth.

"We had to keep playing and get better," Jenkins said.

A year ago, Jenkins scored eight rushing touchdowns against Roseville in a shootout. This time, he had plenty of other runners to assist in the cause and he was part of a defensive unit that has clamped down all comers since Lincoln.

All-American defensive end Arik Armstead was moved to defensive tackle to shore up that unit. Eagles coach Joe Cattolico on Friday raved about the senior's willingness to help the team in any form. Certainly, clogging up the middle isn't nearly as glamorous as chasing down quarterbacks.

"It's a credit to him as a person," Cattolico said.

Nick Terry, Alex Moreno and Tyler Slavich also man the defensive line, and all are returning players from last season's 13-1 Sac-Joaquin Section Division I title team. Linebackers Dunn, Jenkins, Isaiah Saunders, Tyree Hanson and Serne have been superb of late as well. Hanson, Lewis, Davis and Jenkins each came up with an interception Friday.

True to their character, Roseville quarterback Zac Cunha, tailback Casey Lambert and receiver Cody Lindner competed to the end. Lambert scored on a 7-yard run and Cunha hit Lindner for a late 9-yard touchdown pass. They collectively vowed to return to form in the Sierra Foothill League.

Jenkins rushed for 114 yards and Lewis 118. Jenkins was a known commodity this season after rushing for 41 scores last fall. An X-factor was Lewis. In addition to his two scoring runs, the sophomore returned an interception 25 yards for a score. Wyatt Demps, another Pleasant Grove sophomore, blocked a field goal, and linebacker Marquest Bibbs captured the Eagles' dominance when he hammered a Tigers back so hard the back lost his helmet.

This is how Roseville coach Larry Cunha sized up Pleasant Grove, "Disciplined, athletic, physical, solid, hard hitting and well coached."
