A teen who was struck by a sport-utility vehicle in Elk Grove while riding his bike home from school died late Wednesday after spending the week in critical condition at the UC Davis Medical Center.
Tom Mutz, 14, had started high school at Cosumnes Oaks six weeks ago. He was an aspiring chef and a young man described by teachers as an enthusiastic student.
About 3:25 p.m. Sept. 22, Mutz was struck by a motorist in a Lincoln Navigator near Laguna Springs Drive and Civic Center Drive in Elk Grove.
Officer Christopher Trim, Elk Grove Police Department spokesman, said the investigation is ongoing. The department is reviewing witness statements.
Cosumnes Oaks students, along with friends of the Mutz family, gathered Wednesday night in the parking lot of Cosumnes Oaks High School for a candlelight vigil in honor of Mutz.
Participants carried their candles through the route Mutz took on his way home that day.
