Jesuit soccer falls to Maryland power

In a battle of nationally ranked teams, Jesuit lost 2-1 on penalty kicks to DeMatha of Hyattsville, Md., on Saturday night in the Showcase Division of the Gateway Soccer Classic in St. Louis.

The parochial powers played to a 1-1 draw in regulation and overtime before going to penalty kicks, which DeMatha won 4-1.

DeMatha entered the match ranked No. 2 and Jesuit No. 3 in last week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America national boys fall rankings. The Marauders are No. 9 this week.

In its other match at the 59-team tournament, Jesuit tied Chaminade of St. Louis 1-1 last Thursday.

Jesuit's Miguel De Sousa scored in the 73rd minute to tie the match seven minutes after Chaminade had taken a 1-0 lead.

Behind sophomore sensation Tommy Thompson, Granite Bay finished 2-1 in the Bracket A division of the Gateway Classic.

Thompson had a hat trick as Granite Bay defeated Thomas Aquinas of Overland Park, Kan., 3-1 in the tournament opener, then scored once in the Grizzlies' 4-1 win over Christian Brothers of St. Louis in Saturday's finale.

The wins were sandwiched around a 2-1 loss to then-No. 12 Cherry Creek of Aurora, Colo., in which Thompson scored on a late penalty kick.

"We should have won that game," Granite Bay coach Steve Fischer said. "We dominated possession but had two little breakdowns. I felt the same way about Jesuit against DeMatha. The better team lost."

Granite Bay and Jesuit will each host No. 4 Marquette University High of Milwaukee this week. The unbeaten Hilltoppers play at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Granite Bay and 11 a.m. Saturday at Jesuit.

Rocklin, Del Oro run to '4000' team titles

Rocklin defeated Jesuit 42-55 for the boys team title and Del Oro defeated Rocklin 54-68 for the girls crown in the Del Oro 4000 cross country race Saturday in Loomis.

Del Oro's Trevor Stephens placed first in the boys race, covering the 2.48-mile course in 12 minutes, 55 seconds.

Stephens narrowly defeated Whitney's Ryan Hodgens (12:56). Pleasant Grove's Caton Avilla was third (13:20).

Kylie Goo of Westmoor (Daly City) won the girls race in 15:14. El Camino's Neysa Mains placed second (15:40). Alexa Lua of Del Oro (15:41) was third.
