High school football: Union Mine's Tow runs into area history

Published: Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011 - 12:00 am | Page 2C

Sean Tow may be small at 5-foot-6 and 160 pounds, but he continues to put up big numbers.

The shifty junior tailback for the Union Mine Diamondbacks scooted into regional history Friday with his 414-yard rushing effort that keyed a 40-14 victory over Galt in a Sierra Valley Conference game.

Tow also took over the Sac-Joaquin Section lead with 1,534 rushing yards.

The win keeps the El Dorado school (3-3, 2-1) a half-game out of first behind Cosumnes Oaks, Liberty Ranch and Vista del Lago, all 3-1.

Tow is the fifth area back to eclipse the 400-yard barrier and first since James Montgomery of Cordova set a regional record with 449 yards against Oak Ridge in 2005. Tow carried 17 times and scored four touchdowns.

Tow had 320 yards at halftime, a good three-week stretch for most backs.

Cougar uprising – Sporting a 2-4 record that included a 7-6 victory over winless Johnson and blowout losses to River City (41-0), Antelope (38-13) and Colfax (41-14), Center pulled the upset of the season last Friday.

Center took a 21-0 lead on then-No. 12 Bear River and won 35-28, thanks to special teams. A fake punt resulted in a 22-yard gain in the fourth quarter, and Robert Gervais' 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown won it with 30 seconds left.

Tyrel Anderson passed for 149 yards and one touchdown and rushed for 74 yards and two touchdowns as Center won at home for the first time this season.

Grass Valley thriller – Del Oro coach Casey Taylor was emotionally spent yet giddy following his team's come-from-behind victory in Grass Valley last Friday.

No. 2 Del Oro beat then-No. 8 Nevada Union 35-31 on Bobby Heatherington's four-yard touchdown pass to Russell Smith with 24 seconds left. If there's a defining moment for the Golden Eagles this season, that winning drive was it.

"Bobby had several passes that were just textbook throws, just outstanding," Taylor said.

Del Oro hosts No. 4 Granite Bay on Friday in a Sierra Foothill League showdown that could decide the champion. The teams tied for the league title last season.

Delta River madness – Folsom outlasted Sheldon 63-40 in yet another wild Delta River League game as the teams combined for more than 1,000 yards of offense.

Tanner Trosin passed for 479 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions, and he ran for two touchdowns. Three scoring passes went to Doug Vernon.

Sheldon's Josh Hadley rushed for 193 yards and three scores.

"I don't know how I'm going to survive all these games," said Folsom coach Kris Richardson, whose team is outscoring foes by an average of 42.7-36.4.

Wolves uprising – Woodland returned to the rankings, thanks largely to linemen Jordan Arellano and Kenny Coleman and versatile Dalen Jones.

Jones has flourished in the spread for the No. 20 Wolves (6-1). He has passed for 1,002 yards and 13 touchdowns (two interceptions) and rushed for 563 and eight scores. Woodland plays at four-time Tri-County Conference champion and No. 16 Inderkum on Friday.

Scoring theme – Three times this season, coaches have gone for a two-point conversion and a win rather than prolonging overtime. Each game ended 50-49.

The latest was Saturday in the Sacramento Metro Athletic League when Delta's Vince Heffington scored on a one-yard run against Woodland Christian. The Saints then ran for the conversion.

Lincoln of Stockton defeated Pleasant Grove, and Casa Roble topped Vista del Lago in the previous games by that score.
