Nine Occupy Sacramento protesters were arrested last night at Chavez Park for failure to disperse after their plea to stay all night was rejected by the City Council, organizers said.
There were 57 arrests during the first 12 days of the protest at the downtown park. Tuesday was the 13th day.
Occupy Sacramento protestors argue that people should be allowed to remain in the park as part of a continuing demonstration and that the city is wasting resources arresting the non-violent demonstrators.
City officials note that if Occupy Sacramento is allowed to stay all night in Chavez Plaza, then others, such as the homeless, would have to be granted a sanctioned spot to camp.
City police will keep clearing out the park at 11 p.m. on weeknights and midnight on the weekends.
