Scholarships loom for three CBS golfers

Christian Brothers senior golfers Clare Sorensen, Nichole Cruz and Sadie Strain will sign NCAA national letters of intent Nov. 9.

Sorensen will play for Seattle; Cruz for Hawaii and Strain for Santa Clara.

Monday, the trio helped Christian Brothers shoot a team-record 408 in winning the Capital Valley Conference tournament at Turkey Creek.

Sorensen was the medalist with a four-over-par 76. Strain (81) finished third. Cruz tied teammate Lauren Dahl for fourth (82).

• The Sac-Joaquin Section girls golf playoffs are Monday at these sites: D-I North, Rancho Solano in Fairfield; D-I South, at Creekside (Modesto); D-II, Haggin Oaks (MacKenzie course); D-III, Sierra View; D-IV, Lockeford Springs; D-V, Stevinson Ranch.

Rio Americano, Jesuit meet tonight in polo

Rio Americano will host Jesuit tonight at 7 in a boys water polo match.

The Raiders improved to 17-4 with their 20-10 win over Mira Loma on Monday. Jesuit is 13-6 and coming off a 14-12 victory over Division-I rival Davis on Oct. 12.

Jack Dubois (52 goals), Johnny Neumann (49) and Michael Woodbury (35) are Rio Americano's scoring leaders.

Luke Felton tops Jesuit with 45 goals. Matt Hamilton has 44 and Phil Cozens 26. Cozens also has 28 assists.

Jesuit defeated Rio Americano 7-6 on Sept. 10 in the championship of the Schmitt Tournament in San Jose.

Two football players earn all-star spots

Grant's Shaq Thompson and Whitney's Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick will be honored by their respective schools for being named to prestigious all-star football games.

The multi-talented Thompson, projected as a college defensive back, will be honored Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Grant for his selection to the 2012 U.S. Army All-American Bowl set for Jan. 7 in the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Cope-Fitzpatrick, a tight end/defensive end who has verbally committed to USC, will be honored Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Whitney for being selected to the Under Armour All-America game Jan. 5 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Placer boys run to first at Bella Vista

The Placer boys cross country team won the small-schools race with 76 points at the Bella Vista Invitational on Saturday at Willow Hills Reservoir in Folsom. El Dorado (87) was second.

Victory Christian freshman Neilsen Powless was the top area finisher (second in 16 minutes, 37.13 seconds).

In other meet highlights:

• Alexa Lua's third-place finish (20:37.76) helped Del Oro (65) finish second to Galena of Reno (60) in the girls small-school race. Whitney's Megan Hall was second (20:33.99).

• Laurn LaRocco's third-place finish in 19:95.87 helped St. Francis (56) finish second to Assumption of Louisville, Ky. (22) in the large-school girls race.
