Sacramento Live: 'Sleeper' gets laughs about post-9/11 paranoia

Published: Friday, Oct. 28, 2011 - 12:00 am | Page 5TICKET

Catherine Butterfield's "The Sleeper" seems a bit like a dinner theater mystery, only with terrorists. The comedy, which won the 2004 Kaufman and Hart Award, was created in the post-9/11 era and addresses the paranoia and occasional hysteria that ensued after the great tragedy.

Resurrection Theatre's Margaret Morneau directs a cast featuring Alexandra Ralph Evans and Dan Featherston with Jouni Kirjola, Kellie Yvonne Raines, Cody Parcel, Jay Patrick and Alysha S. Krumm.

At the Wilkerson Theatre in the California Stage Complex at 25th and R streets, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through Nov. 21.

Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for students and seniors. Also one showing Thursday for $10. Tickets are available online at BrownPaperTickets.com or can be reserved by calling (916) 838-0618.

Singing to the choir

Perla Warren, a giant among choral conductors, choral teachers and in choral jazz, receives a well-deserved tribute this weekend in two concerts at the American River College theater.

Several area choral groups including the Sacramento Master Singers, American River College Chamber Singers, R.S.V.P. and Moodswing, are joining to present "From Sand to Pearls, a Choral Tribute to Perla Warren."

A choir of Warren's alumni from her years teaching at American River College also will perform. The shows occur at 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday at American River College, 4700 College Oak Drive.

Tickets are $20 online at www.mastersingers.org, by phone at (916) 788-7464, or at the door.

Evil dead

It just wouldn't be Halloween without "Evil Dead the Musical." Well, maybe it would be, but this just makes it campier and scarier.

Five college students go to an abandoned cabin in the woods and break into funny songs. They also unleash a satanic force that turns them all into demons.

I know, you hate when that happens. But think of how much fun it is when it happens to someone else. Michael Coleman directs with musical direction by Connie Mockenhaupt.

At the Sutter Street Theatre, 717 Sutter St., in Folsom. 8 p.m. Sunday and Monday; 11:45 p.m. Saturday-Monday. Tickets: $15-$23. For other information, call (916) 353-1001 or go to www.garbeaus.com.

Harlem on Stockton

Marichal J. Brown presents his third annual "Harlem on Stockton Boulevard" tribute to the Harlem Renaissance. The multidisciplinary celebration features music, poetry, art, and photography in the tradition of the Harlem Renaissance arts movement.

Performers include Carla Fleming, Charles Curtis Blackwell, Noah "SupaNova" Hayes, Annie Jaye and poet Terry Moore. 8 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $15, $20 and $25. At Master Barber & Beauty Shop, 4340 Stockton Blvd., Suite 2. Call (916) 457-8708.
