In his East Coast debut, Sacramento middleweight Brandon Gonzales improved his undefeated record to 15-0 Friday night with an eight-round split decision over veteran Ossie Duran in their main event at Bally's Event Center in Atlantic City, N.J.
Two judges favored Gonzales, 27, by matching scores of 77-75, while the other had the 34-year-old Duran (26-9-2), from Paterson, N.J., ahead 78-74.

Jessup wins shutout
Senior Stephanie Long and freshman Kim Randall scored two second-half goals to lead William Jessup to a 2-0 win over UC Santa Cruz at Jessup Field in Rocklin, Jessup reported. Jessup improved to 9-7.
Jessup volleyballers wins
Junior Hannah Baldwin recorded a game-high 12 kills to help William Jessup sweep UC Merced 25-19, 25-21 and 26-24 in Rocklin, Jessup reported. Sophomore Elaina Gilbert had 15 assists.
ARC women finish 2nd
The American River College Lady Beavers finished second in the Big 8 Conference cross country championships at ARC, qualifying for the Northern California Community College Championships next week, the school reported.
The team was led by Sara Howard with a time of 18:32, her season best, and a course record.
MMA at Thunder Valley
Two mixed martial arts bouts involving Sacramento- area prospects will share the spotlight on a mixed fight card on Nov. 5 at the Thunder Valley Resort Casino in Lincoln. Matched in four-rounders are heavyweights Jerald James against Marty Farmer and light heavyweights Billy Carothers against James Chaney.
Six pro and two amateur boxing bouts will fill out the card. It begins at 6 p.m.
