Christian Brothers wins girls Masters

A par 72 by Nichole Cruz helped Christian Brothers win the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters girls golf championship Monday at the Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton.

Lauren Dahl shot a 74, Sadie Strain a 76, Clare Sorensen a 78 and Emily Achondo a 99 for the Falcons (399).

Lodi (401) was second followed by St. Francis (412), the five-time defending Masters champions.

Those three teams advanced to the California Interscholastic Federation Northern California championships Monday at Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto.

Area girls to advance as individuals are Granite Bay's Paige Lee (72), tying Cruz and Enochs' Shawnee Martinez for medalist honors.

Woodland's Sara Scarlett and Oakmont's Maddy Gedeon also advanced to the NorCals with 76s. They prevailed in a three-person playoff with Rocklin's Camille Wagg.

Christian Brothers' Cruz (Hawaii), Strain (Santa Clara) and Sorensen (Seattle) have verbally committed to play golf in college. They are scheduled to sign NCAA letters of intent Wednesday.

Section water polo playoffs begin Friday

The Sac-Joaquin Section girls and boys water polo playoffs begin this weekend.

The Division I girls playoffs open Friday at Johansen High School in Modesto. The D-II girls will begin Friday at Woodcreek.

The D-I boys will compete Saturday at Johansen; the D-II boys Saturday at Woodcreek.

The Rio Americano girls, who open Friday at 8 a.m. against Sonora, are seeking a 10th consecutive D-II championship. No other girls team has won a title at that level since the section started the D-II playoffs in 2002.

In D-I girls, two-time defending section champion Davis plays Bear Creek of Stockton at 8 a.m. Section runner-up St. Francis faces Enochs of Modesto at 3 p.m.

Davis and St. Francis have met in the championship match the past seven years, with the Blue Devils winning four times.
