Convoy of Hope brings aid to Sacramento's needy

Convoy of Hope rolled into Sacramento Saturday, offering up what organizers called the largest humanitarian effort ever in the city.

In its second year at Cal Expo, the volunteer organization expected to serve 15,000-20,000 people, more than double last year's total.

Anyone in need, without need of proof, was offered a hot meal, a haircut, clothing, family portraits, job services, medical assistance and groceries.

The event is conducted under the umbrella of a national organization, but is organized locally, under the leadership of Restoration LifeChurch in Sacramento.

"This will be the largest Convoy of Hope event ever," said Dan Axtell, pastor for Restoration Life.

With 11,000 served by midday of the five-hour event, he expected they would eclipse the record of 14,000 served in Hawaii.

The event involved about 100 churches and more than 2,000 volunteers.
