Massive concrete and steel piles underpin the new Bay Bridge self-anchored suspension span that will open in 2013. Irregularities in Caltrans integrity tests and issues of pile design have raised questions about pile reliability in a worst-case earthquake. Most of the piles supporting the main bridge tower were tested by Duane Wiles, a technician who falsified other tests and later misrepresented his actions.
