Sacramento County supervisors approved an emergency ordinance Wednesday prohibiting any new adult-related businesses in the county's unincorporated areas.
County planners recognized the need to update the ordinance as they conducted a review of all planning ordinances, said Leighann Moffitt of the county's Planning Division.
The city of Sacramento has a more restrictive ordinance governing adult-related businesses, she said. That, combined with a number of vacant buildings which could make property owners more willing to rent to such businesses could lead to an increase in adult-related businesses, Moffitt said.
The county had four adult-related businesses as of last month, said Chris Andis, county spokeswoman.
The ordinance defines adult-related businesses as a "bathhouse, escort bureau, modeling studio, or sexual encounter center."
The county has about 10 months to come up with a proposed permanent ordinance. The planning division hopes to have one ready around the start of next year, Moffitt said.
