Sacramento Live: Last chances, one-time show

Published: Friday, Nov. 11, 2011 - 12:00 am | Page 5TICKET

Sacramento has a deep quality-acting pool, and Matt K. Miller has been one of the most consistently satisfying and effectively versatile actors of that group.

You can still catch Miller at his best in Tracy Letts' "Superior Donuts" at the new Capital Stage theater space on J Street. Miller's gentle, understated performance gives some heft to the often hard-edged, Pulitzer-winning Letts' unusual sentiment here.

The play's set in present-day Chicago, and Miller plays Arthur Przybszewksi, whose heart and soul are lost in the 1960s. The story never leaves his funky little old-school doughnut shop.

The fine ensemble includes Jammy Bulaya, Gary Pannullo, Janis Stevens, Lori Russo and Anthony D'Juan. Shows are at 8 p.m Friday, 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday (last show). At Capital Stage, 2215 J St., Sacramento. Tickets are $20-$32.

Drama at Celebration Arts

Similarly, August Wilson's "Two Trains Running" never leaves the rundown Pittsburgh Hill District diner where the 1969 story is set.

The Celebration Arts production of the 1992 drama, also in its last week, is the seventh play in Wilson's 10-part series, "The Pittsburgh Cycle," chronicling the experiences of African Americans decade by decade.

Rob Anthony Gray, William Ellerbee, Patrick Council, Tisha Hill-Smith, DeAngelo Mack and Romann Hodge are the ensemble in director James Wheatley's cast.

At Celebration Arts, 4469 D St., Sacramento. Shows are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday (last show). Tickets are $15 general and $13 for students and seniors.

Falcon's Eye studies humanity

If you'd prefer a more timeless tale of virtue, morality and the baseness of human nature, you're in luck.

Falcon's Eye Theatre director David Harris' production of Bertolt Brecht's "The Good Person of Szechwan" has its three final performances this weekend. The student-production extension of the Department of Theatre and Cinema at Folsom Lake College performs in the state-of-the-art Three Stages facility at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday (last show). Tickets are $15 general, $10 for students and seniors.

Broadway comes to K Street

Actress-singer Vicki Lewis has given several bravura performances at Music Circus the last few seasons ("Gypsy," "Funny Girl," "Anything Goes").

She plays herself for one night at the Cosmopolitan Cabaret. Lewis has a big, soulfulvoice, but she's not trying to blow you away with her power as much sway you with her heart.

"An Evening with Vicki Lewis" benefits California Musical Theatre and provides a rare opportunity to experience this Broadway talent in a casually sophisticated environment. The concert is at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Table seats are $75, tiered seats $50. There will be complimentary desserts, a no-host bar and live auction. At the Cosmopolitan Cabaret, 1000 K St., Sacramento.
