The Buzz: Darrell Issa opens House probe of California Air Resources Board

Published: Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011 - 12:00 am | Page 3A

The California Air Resources Board is now being investigated by a legislative body on the other side of the continent: the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

The committee chairman, Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Vista, sent Air Resources Board Chairwoman Mary Nichols a 13-page letter earlier this week advising her that he was "expanding" the committee's ongoing investigation into the establishment of fuel economy standards.

Nichols had declined to attend a committee hearing on the subject last month.

"Your refusal to subject yourself and your office to congressional scrutiny is emblematic of the core concern that many in Congress share … that CARB, as a state actor, is unresponsive to congressional concerns and unappreciative of congressional priorities," Issa wrote Nichols on Wednesday.

Issa accompanied his observation with a series of specific questions and document requests, dealing with California's role in the fuel economy standard deliberations.

The board, which is authorized to regulate greenhouse gas emissions, has until Nov. 23 to meet the demands.

CAMPAIGN WATCH

Former Secretary of State Bruce McPherson is considering a bid for office next year. The moderate Republican, whom former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed secretary of state in 2005, told his hometown newspaper that he is leaning toward running for the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors. McPherson lost to Democrat Debra Bowen in 2006.

WORTH REPEATING

"I think we're in for a rough ride for the next couple of years in terms of the budget, but we are going to promote investments in the state, because I think they're crucial."
