Helping Others: Junior League's Poinsettia Luncheon

What: The 25th annual Poinsettia Luncheon, presented by the Sacramento Junior League Sustainers.

When: Dec. 7; 10:30 a.m, mingling and shopping; noon lunch.

Where: The DoubleTree Inn, 2001 Point West Way, Sacramento.

Reservations: Sustainers may make reservations for themselves and guests by calling the JL office at (916) 921-1096.

Program: Gift boutique, friendship renewals and fashion show staged by Diane Grenz and Linda Canfield Scott, Sustainer members. On the ramp will be JL Sustainers and Actives, plus husbands and sons. Fashions for the Silver Screen-themed show will be from the Brown House, Felicia Strati, Khakis, Robin Lyle and Patrick James.

Beneficiary: Funds raised will be designated for those in need throughout the community.

Featured volunteers: Members of Sacramento Junior League volunteer to improve the community in many ways. The JL has been active in founding many programs as well as having members serve on boards. It's all part of the "how" and "why" of JL. But here is a bonus: Members develop lifelong friendships, which is why the Poinsettia Luncheon is always a sellout.

The luncheon idea started 25 years ago after Barbara Kennedy attended a mother-daughter luncheon in Reno with her daughter.

"I thought it was such a nice idea, I decided to start a mother-daughter lunch here," said Kennedy. "It evolved into the Sustainer holiday luncheon celebrating friendships created through community volunteerism in support of the greater Sacramento region."

Nancy Tate, the 2011 chairwoman, was president during the inaugural event. Said Tate: "Members have embraced this event over the years as we reaffirm that Junior League community projects have made a great impact in our community, as well as in our personal lives. A lot of things wouldn't have happened without the involvement of the Junior League."

Editor's note: This story has been changed from an earlier version to correct the date of the event. Corrected Nov. 16
