Retail job postings online in the Sacramento region rose in October, according to the state Employment Development Department's latest Help Wanted Online report, as retailers began to gear up for the holidays.

Registered nurse postings, at 1,252, dominated October's listing, as they have for months in the report, but combined retail sales and retail management postings for the month were nearly identical, at 1,236 online ads.

Retail sales positions – up by 40 from September at 597 postings – and retail managers postings – up by 35 ads to 639 – ranked third and fourth, respectively, on the list of October's most advertised categories.

The retail postings caught the attention of EDD labor market analyst Justin Wehner.

"It's interesting to see those postings bubble up to the top. When you take retail and first-line (retail) supervisors, you're getting close to registered nurse numbers," he said.

The increases come as employers look to hire and train new workers in October in preparation for the November start to the holiday shopping season, said EDD labor market consultant Heather Chamizo.

"In a normal situation, you start to see the trend go up in October," Chamizo said.

Computer systems analysts placed No. 2 in the report with 709 postings, up from 676 in September.

The report, released Friday, tracked Sacramento-area online employment postings through October.

Health care employers continued to lead in job ads posted in October.

Catholic Healthcare West posted 468 ads, while Kaiser Permanente posted 370 online to top the list. Sutter Health and Catholic Healthcare West Foundation also placed in the month's top 10.

About 1,000 fewer ads were posted by Sacramento employers in October, at 14,617.

But Sacramento-based job posts still led the region.

Roseville (1,728), Rancho Cordova (1,248), Folsom (1,186) and Elk Grove (625), rounded out the top five, according to the report.

Computer training offered

Technology training nonprofit Stride Center is registering applicants through December for its A+ Certificate computer training program.

The 23-week Stride Center program, offered in tandem with Goodwill Industries, begins Jan. 17, 2012, and is targeted at low-income and displaced workers.

Classes are 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays at Goodwill Job Connection Center, 4207 Norwood Ave., Sacramento.

A+ certification demonstrates competency as a computer technician, including knowledge of operating systems, computer hardware and computer assembly.

"Stride focuses on the tech sector – it's the binder of all business now," said Darby Patterson, director of Stride Center Sacramento. "We provide the expertise that today's office needs."

Space is limited. Scholarships are available.

For more information and to register, call the Stride Center's Espi Espinoza at (916) 596-0569 or email sacramento@stridecenter.org.
