High school football notes: Elk Grove, Folsom set to square off

Published: Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011 - 12:00 am | Page 2C

Kris Richardson echoed a sentiment a lot of high school football fans in the region have suggested for weeks.

Bring on the Folsom Bulldogs and Elk Grove Thundering Herd for a Sac-Joaquin Section Division II semifinal showdown of storied programs.

"This is what we wanted," said Richardson, Folsom's coach. "You want to play the best teams, and Elk Grove's been great."

Both teams have been, actually. Elk Grove is 12-0 with superb play on both sides of the ball, headed by a three-man offensive backfield of Deon Ransom, Robert Frazier and Wadus Parker, nationally recruited lineman Steven Moore and an opportunistic defense that includes linemen B'won Canada and Matt Nugent and linebacker brothers Noah and Josh Letuligasenoa.

Those defenders will bear down on the state's total offense leader, Folsom quarterback Tanner Trosin, who has shattered section marks for yards in a season. In leading Folsom to a 10-2 mark, Trosin has passed for 4,401 yards and 42 touchdowns and run for 941 and 18, totals some teams don't accomplish in two seasons.

Trosin has been boosted by strong line play and a surplus of receivers in J'Juan Muldrow, Doug Vernon, Troy Knox and Carson McMurtrey. Folsom is the defending state champion and playing like it down the stretch.

"That's an excellent team," Elk Grove coach Chris Nixon said. "It'll be fun."

Does Elk Grove have the wing-T run offense to sustain long drives and keep Trosin's offense on the sideline? Can Trosin pick apart a Herd defense that has battered all comers, posting playoff routs of 49-0 and 55-6 over River City and Beyer of Modesto, respectively? Folsom presents a much greater challenge.

Rodrigues support – There was genuine concern and sportsmanship for Whitney quarterback Jake Rodrigues, whose season ended horrifically when he broke his leg against Cosumnes Oaks on Friday.

Cosumnes Oaks coach Scooter Gomes and senior leader Marcus Rios talked to Rodrigues as he was strapped to a stretcher. On Saturday, area players such as quarterback Brendan Keeney of Granite Bay reached out to offer good wishes.

Said Rodrigues on Sunday: "I have a lot of respect for them. It's what's keeping me going, and it's highly appreciated."

707 powers – Emerging fast in D-I and D-II are Bethel of Vallejo and Vacaville, respectively, of Solano County.

Bethel won its 11th in a row, upending Grant 26-21 in D-I and shutting out the Pacers in the second half for the most significant win in the program's relatively short history under coach Jeff Turner. Absorbing students from closed Hogan High, Bethel moved up from D-III this season and takes on defending D-I champion Pleasant Grove in a semifinal.

Vacaville has been a factor for decades, first under famed coach Tom Zunino and in the last decade under Zunino's son-in-law, coach Mike Papadopoulos. The Bulldogs beat St. Mary's of Stockton 27-19 in the mud to earn a D-II semifinal showdown at unbeaten Buhach Colony of Atwater. Melvin Mason rushed for 143 yards and Curtis Goins 125 for Vacaville, which has won 10 straight.

Tough in Truckee – Truckee concluded its season with its third consecutive Nevada 3A state championship – the Wolverines compete in Nevada because of proximity – to give coach Bob Shaffer his eighth overall title.

Patrick Shaffer, the coach's son, passed for 1,861 yards and 18 touchdowns. Jake Pettit ran for 15 touchdowns, and the defense made 23 sacks and 20 interceptions.

The Nevada record for consecutive wins in 11-man football is 41 by the Meadows of Las Vegas (1998-2001). Truckee has won 36 in a row and 44 of its last 45.
