The U.S. Forest Service has extended to Jan. 13 the public comment period on its proposed Fallen Leaf Lake Trail Access and Travel Management project.
The previous deadline was Wednesday.
The project area totals approximately 12,960 acres on the south shore of Lake Tahoe, with boundaries extending from Pope to Baldwin beaches on the north, and to the south and west shores of Fallen Leaf Lake.
The plan includes upgrading some of the approximately 42 miles of existing trails and decommissioning others.
Parking and access roads would be improved and the bridge over Fallen Leaf Lake dam would be replaced with one designed to accommodate bicycle and equestrian use.
Temporary closures for tree removal and other work, as well as noise, would impact a campground, beaches and surrounding areas during the project, which could begin next spring and is expected to be completed by 2014.
