It started with a reported assault at Johnny's Cathouse bar in the 1700 block of California Street in Redding shortly after midnight, according to the Redding Police Department.
Before it ended, up to 50 patrons would join a bar brawl while, outside, hundreds of people gathered on the street, police said today.
The first call came at 12:18 a.m. when a 24-year-old Redding woman said her domestic partner had assaulted her inside the bar. She sustained cuts above her left eye and upper lip.
Little more than a half hour later, as police were leaving the bar, they saw a teen fleeing a nearby alleyway and, investigating, found a 22-year-old Redding man in a nearby bank parking lot who had been stabbed. The victim in that case, Cody Radford, was taken to Mercy Medical Center for treatment to a non-lethal stab wound.
The male suspect was described as American Indian, 14 to 16 years of age, 5-foot-3, 145 pounds, with brown hair. He wore a dark colored "hoody" sweatshirt and baggie pants.

Less than 30 minutes after that episode, police again were dispatched to the Cathouse bar by a patron's report of sales of controlled substances. On the way, the department began receiving calls about the bar brawl, involving up to 50 bar-goers.
When police arrived, they found the bar's security personnel struggling with bar patrons. Three people - a woman, a man from Santa Ana and a second man from Anderson, were taken into custody.
By that time, several hundred people had gathered on the streets and were refusing orders to disperse, police said. Several physical fights broke out, so Redding Police called on the California Highway Patrol, Shasta County Sheriffs Office and the Shasta County Marshalls Office for help in dispersing the crowd.
