    Ship Damage

    In dry dock during the attack, the USS Downes (left) and the USS Cassin (right) were heavily damaged. Main and auxilaiary machinery fittings were later transferred to new hulls. Behind these two vessels is the USS Pennsylvania, the 33,100-ton Flagship of the Pacific Fleet. The Pennsylvania, relatively unharmed after the first wave, became the main target of the second wave at 8:40 a.m., but was struck by only one bomb.

    Beached Midget Submarine

    Japanese two-man submarine beached near Bellows Field, on the east coast of Oahu. A faulty compass sent the vessel off course, drifting away from Pearl Harbor, its intended target. After a failed attempt to scuttle the sub, the captian, Ensign Kazuo Sakamaki, and the second crewman swam ashore. Only Sakamaki made land. He was taken prisoner becoming "POW No. 1" the first prisoner of war taken by America.
