Four inmates injured during a riot at California State Prison-Sacramento early Wednesday afternoon had been released from hospitals by evening, and a fifth had been admitted, according to authorities.

Earlier that day, prison officials said at least nine inmates were injured. However, prison spokesman Sgt. Tony Quinn said he did not have information by evening about the status of the other four injured inmates.

He also said officials had not yet determined how many inmates were stabbed, how many were shot by correctional officers trying to subdue the riot and how many suffered blunt force trauma during the fighting, Quinn said.

Correctional officers used pepper spray, rubber bullets and rounds from Mini 14 rifles to quell the fight, which began on the yard about 12:30 p.m. and involved about 50 inmates, officials said.

Officers found five inmate-made weapons on the yard where the riot occurred, Quinn said. They stopped combing the yard when the sun went down and were expected to resume their search today, Quinn said.

Quinn said it was not yet known how many inmates were responsible for starting the riot, but that the fighting had been caught on surveillance videos to be reviewed as part of the investigation.
