Students at Rio Americano High School are getting praise, not detention, for using their cell phones at school.
Actually, they used old cell phones to win a contest that will enable the school to cover some costs for coaching and cheerleading programs that were cut at the school.
The contest by Metro PCS and KSFM 102.5 asked students to collect used and retired cell phones.
The students at Rio Americano - led by the cheerleaders - collected more than a third of all the phones collected in the contest - 379 out of 1,066 collected by 10 schools.
In addition to a $2,500 prize, to be presented this morning, the students will be awarded with a dance DJ'd by KSFM.
The students' annual winter dance had been eliminated by budget cuts.
