Following a leak last summer, three underground fuel-storage tanks are being removed, along with contaminated soil, at Zephyr Cove Resort on Lake Tahoe's east shore.

The work will be visible from the highway and to resort visitors through Friday and possibly later depending on the weather, said Cheva Heck, public affairs officer with the U.S. Forest Service's Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.

The resort, operated by Aramark Parks and Destinations under a special use permit from the Forest Service, will remain open, Heck said.

Earlier tests showed its water supply to be free from contamination, and the suspected source of the leak was repaired after its June discovery.

The tanks will not be replaced, she said, adding that a new permanent fueling system is being explored.

The resort uses the fuel for its operations, including the sightseeing paddlewheeler M.S. Dixie and a fleet of rental watercraft.

"Right now, the resort isn't running any fueling operations, as it's off-season for boating," Heck said. "At the end of the season, after they emptied the tanks, they were fueling their rental fleet using a temporary above-ground system. The paddlewheeler takes diesel and was fueling up at Ski Run Marina.

"The Forest Service and Aramark coordinated closely with the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency in deciding to proceed with the excavation after the grading season to take advantage of the low groundwater table."
