Valley High School will retire the jerseys of former standouts Roburt Sallie and Wayne Hunter during a ceremony Friday night before the Vikings' game against visiting Laguna Creek.
Sallie and Hunter helped Valley win section championships and finish as CIF NorCal Regional runners-up in 2003 (Division I) and 2004 (Division II).
Sallie went on to play at Memphis; Hunter played for St. Mary's.
Valley boys coach Mathew Bradley, who is coordinating the jersey retirement, said Hunter, now a junior varsity boys basketball coach at Oakland Tech, is expected to attend the game.
Bradley said Sallie, who has been playing basketball in Europe, hopes to attend if his schedule allows.
Laguna Creek boys coach Paul Casey also will be honored for his long tenure as Valley's boys basketball coach and athletic director. Casey coached Hunter and Sallie.
"We just thought it was time to officially recognize Coach Casey's 18 years at Valley," Bradley said. "That's a long time at our school. We wanted to honor Wayne and Roburt because they helped put Valley on the map as far as boys basketball."
The home jerseys of Hunter (No. 24) and Sallie (No. 34) and a special No. 1 jersey for Casey will be framed and hung on the Vikings' gym wall. Hunter and Sallie will receive framed senior-year road jerseys, and Casey will be presented with a framed picture of the 2004 section championship team.
The timing of the ceremony may be fitting for Bradley's No. 16 Vikings.
They won the Frank Godinez Tournament championship Saturday in Turlock by beating Grace Davis of Modesto 71-62 for the championship, led by tournament MVP Robert "Memphis" Perry's 25 points.
Valley last won that tournament in 2003 and 2004.
"We mentioned that in the locker room before the championship game," said Bradley, who is in his fourth season at Valley. "We're striving to do the same type of things as those teams. We still need to make a lot of improvement, and we need to stay focused and not worry about rankings or Maxpreps stats just keep working hard for four quarters and getting W's."
Senior Arron Redd and sophomore Elijah Calloway also made the all-tournament team, but Bradley credits senior point guard and captain Tercail Hadley for the Vikings' fast start.
"He makes our motor run," Bradley said.
