Chuck Hayes has started 233 of his 424 career games, thanks partly to his studious ways. He averaged career highs of 7.9 points and 8.1 rebounds last season for Houston.

Kings Blog: Kings void Hayes' contract after center fails initial physical exam

The Kings announced in a press release Monday morning that center Chuck Hayes, who the team recently signed to a free-agent contract, failed his physical exam and his contract has been voided.

In his physical with the team, Hayes was found to have a heart abnormality in an echo stress test. He had undergone more testing before it was announced that the team would void the contract.

"This morning, in one of the most heartbreaking moments of my professional or personal life, Chuck Hayes was notified that he failed his physical exam with the Sacramento Kings," basketball president Geoff Petrie said in a media release.

Hayes did not play in the Kings exhibition game Saturday night in Oakland and wasn't at Thursday night's team scrimmage at Power Balance Pavilion.

He had signed a four-year deal worth $21.3 million.

The Kings are practicing at their facility this afternoon.

In six prior seasons with Houston Rockets, Hayes averaged 3.4 points and 4.7 rebounds in 17 minutes per game.

The Kings will play their second and final exhibition of the preseason Tuesday night against the Golden State Warriors at Power Balance Pavilion.
