Folsom Lake looks low this time of year.
The dry month may be partly to blame. But, in reality, the lake is only slightly lower than it was this time last year, and holds 88 percent of its average capacity for December.
In winter, the lake must be kept about half-full to provide adequate storage to protect Sacramento from floods.
Larger reservoirs in the region still hold above-average volumes of water, thanks to last winter's bountiful rain and snow. Lake Shasta holds 108 percent of its average volume for this time of year, Lake Oroville, 115 percent, and New Melones, 147 percent.
Don't look for a major break in the dry trend soon. There is a 20 percent chance of light rain in the Sacramento region on Friday, mainly north of Interstate 80. Long-range forecasts show another possibility of rain next Friday.
