Sacramento Metro firefighters were kept busy Thursday morning putting out two large fires: one started by a vehicle in a carport and the other possibly Christmas tree-related.
The first fire broke out about 3:20 a.m. in North Highlands in the 7200 block of Pepperwood Knoll Lane. A car in a carport below apartment units was burning when firefighters arrived.
Crews aggressively attacked the fire, confining damage to three units. An estimated $250,000 in damage was sustained.
The cause of the fire was accidental and started in the under-repair vehicle in the garage, according to a press release.
Another fire occurred about two hours later in Fair Oaks in the 4500 block of Oxbow Creek Place.
The fire, reported by a newspaper carrier, was burning in the front room of the two-story home when firefighters arrived.
The fire, which caused $400,000 in damage, was brought under control and nobody was injured. Residents were away when the fire began.
It is believed that fire had smoldered undetected for more than a day.
A Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District investigator said he could not rule out that "the Christmas tree was the cause," according to a press release.
