Editorial: Some resolutions we'd like to see in 2012

Published: Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011 - 12:00 am | Page 8A

Gov. Jerry Brown: "I vow to keep a higher profile this year."

Sutter Brown: "I vow to keep a lower profile this year."

Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg : "I vow not to allow any more 'gut-and-amend bills' this year, or any year."

Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez: "Oh, come on, Darrell. How am I going to shut down Vernon?"

PG&E executives: "We pledge to spend less money on ridiculous political activities (such as 2010's failed Prop. 16) and more on ensuring that gas pipelines are safe."

NBA Commissioner David Stern: "I pledge that the league and the Kings will negotiate in good faith and pay more than their fair share for a new sports and entertainment arena in Sacramento."

Kings players: "We resolve to stay healthy, hustle back on defense and, last but not least, hit our free throws."

UC Davis police: "We resolve not to casually pepper-spray a crowd of sitting students and other protesters, no matter how much they taunt us, and certainly not when there are 200 video cameras around."

Occupy Movement: "We promise to stop closing down ports in Oakland and elsewhere, resulting in lost wages for truckers and others who are part of the 99 percent."

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson: "I will push hard for my strong mayor proposal. But if the City Council rejects it and I can't get it on the ballot or if voters reject it, I vow to drop it and devote my time in office to bettering Sacramento with my existing powers."

Sacramento City Council: "We vow to let the mayor put his proposal on the ballot so voters can decide this, once and for all."

Sacramento County Executive Brad Hudson: "I pledge that, next time I feel the urge to spend $21,000 sprucing up my office, I'll think twice and go to Goodwill."

Sacramento residents: "We resolve not to use the term 'world-class city' again. Ever." *
