The Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op has taken the first steps toward relocating to a larger building.

In a note to members on Tuesday, general manager Paul Cultrera said the organization has identified a site "within a few blocks" of its current Alhambra Boulevard and S Street store with more space for grocery sales operations and on-site food service as well as offices and classroom space.

The precise location of the new site is not being revealed until the project's developers – Ravel Rasmussen Properties and Separovich/Domich Real Estate – file applications with the city and talk with neighbors near the potential new store, Cultrera said.

The developers could not be reached for comment.

The co-op, with about 12,000 members, has been coping for years with inadequate parking and sales space for its growing operation.

It tried to address that by opening a new store in Elk Grove in 2005 but closed it 18 months later because of inadequate sales.

Co-op board member Steven Maviglio said Tuesday that "after what happened with Elk Grove our members were adamant that we stay very close to where we are.

"Mission accomplished."

In his letter, posted on the co-op's website, Cultrera said the relocation issue will be submitted to members by early April, with the goal of opening the new store by the middle of 2014.
