UCD chancellor outlines new direction for athletics department

As part of the search for a new athletic director at UC Davis, Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi sent a letter this week outlining preliminary direction for the future of the athletics department.

She said she is committed to UC Davis athletics staying at the Division I level and maintaining the current 23 varsity teams. She also recommended a "creative and entrepreneurial funding model" for the athletics department that emphasizes fundraising and marketing and does not increase student fees to fund athletics.

The university's former athletic director, Greg Warzecka, stepped down June 30 after 16 years.

Roseville's Bates attends MLS combine in Florida

Santa Clara University defender Mykell Bates of Roseville hopes to follow several former Broncos with area ties into Major League Soccer.

Bates is one of 52 college seniors participating in the MLS Player Combine that continues today through Tuesday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The combine is a prelude to Thursday's MLS draft and the Jan. 17 supplemental draft. Former Broncos Peter Lowry (Bella Vista-Portland Timbers), Steve Cronin (Bella Vista-DC United) and Jalil Anibaba (Davis-Chicago Fire) played in the MLS last season.

Bates, a defender and two-time team captain, made the All-West Coast Conference first team for the second consecutive season. In high school, Bates was a three-time Parade All-American and helped Roseville win the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II crown as a freshman.
