Large waves are forecast for the Mavericks big wave surfing contest at the famously treacherous break near Half Moon Bay. But everywhere from Santa Cruz to San Diego is seeing 12 to 15 foot swells. The Mavericks competition marks the opening of the 2012 big wave season. The competitors include 11-time surfing world champion Kelly Slater and previous Mavericks winner Greg Long. The contest window opened Jan. 1 and ends March 31. Organizers wait for the right mixture of swell and weather conditions and then give competitors 24-hour notice.
