    Dennis Allen
    Hired: Jan. 25, 2012

Before agreeing to come to the Raiders, Allen was defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos, serving during the 2011-12 season. He had been with the New Orleans Saints the previous five seasons, serving as assistant defensive line coach from 2006-07 and as the secondary coach from 2008-10.

    Dennis Allen
    Hired: Jan. 25, 2012

Not since John Madden was hired to coach the Raiders has the team chosen a head coach without a background in coaching offense, but Allen's resume is heavy on D. Experts expect the hiring of a strong offensive assistant to be another team priority.
  • RAIDERS VS. EAGLES
    Tom Cable
    Years: 2008-2010. Record: 17-27

Tom Cable, reacting after being called for unsportsmanlike conduct during a 2009 game, never got anything going in Oakland, leading the team to records of 4-8, 5-11 and 8-8.

  • Raiders Kiffin Football
    Lane Kiffin
    Years: 2007-2008. Record: 5-15

Lane Kiffin, left, looking up at owner Al Davis in what become somewhat of an iconic and telling image, was among the most problematic of head coach hirings. He bridled at Davis' hands-on (some say meddling) approach and made the mistake of digging in and going to war with the owner. A firing, accusations and lawsuits followed.

  • Art Shell
    Years: 2006. Record: 2-14

His second stint as head coach was worse than the first for Art Shell, a steaming pile of 2-14 and another pink slip from his old mentor Al Davis.

  • Norv Turner
    Years: 2004-2005. Record: 9-23

Norv Turner went 5–11 in 2004 his first year replacing Bill Callahan, followed by a 4–12 record in 2005, and was fired on Jan. 3, 2006. During Turner's two years with the Raiders, he managed only one win against his division, the AFC West. In addition, Turner was unable to jump start an offense that, in 2005, included All-Pro wide receiver Randy Moss.

  • Bill Callahan
    Years: 2002-2003. Record: 15-17

Bill Callahan, celebrating the 2003 AFC Championship with wide receiver Jerry Rice, took the team to the Super Bowl, where the Raiders were humbled by Tampa Bay, coached by former Raiders coach Jon Gruden. The next season was miserable, and the team finished 4-12, leading to Callahan's firing.

  • Jon Gruden
    Years: 1998-2001. Record: 38-26

Jon Gruden, with his best "Chucky" face, brought new life to the Raiders, but he ultimately clashed with Al Davis, and his on-field success could not ameliorate his problems with the boss. He went to Tampa Bay after leaving the Raiders and won a Super Bowl, beating the Raiders.

  • Joe Bugel
    Years: 1997. Record: 4-12

This image seems to tell it all as Joe Bugel got the thumb from Al Davis after one unimpressive season.

  • RAIDERS
    Mike White
    Years: 1995-1996. Record: 15-17

Mike White's tenure started with great promise as the Raiders bolted to an 8-2 record in 1995 only to collapse, finish 8-8 and miss the playoffs. The slide continue next season as the team finished 7-9, leading the White's departure.

  • Art Shell
    Years: 1989-1994. Record: 54-38

As coach of the Raiders (at the time in Los Angeles), Shell compiled a record of 54 wins, 38 losses, and was named AFC Coach of the Year in 1990, when the Raiders won the AFC West division with a 12-4 record, and advanced to the AFC Championship game in the playoffs. Al Davis fired Shell after a 9-7 season in 1994, a move Davis later said he regretted.

  • Mike Shanahan
    Mike Shanahan
    Years: 1988-1989. Record: 8-12

Mike Shanahan took over in 1988, becoming the first modern Raiders coach from outside the organization. He ultimately clashed with owner Al Davis and was fired during his second season. He went on to success and Super Bowl victories in Denver, making a habit of beating the Raiders.
  • Tom Flores
    Years: 1979-1987. Record: 83-53

Arguably the greatest Raiders coach, Flores led the team to Super Bowl victories in Oakland and Los Angeles. He move to the team's front office after the 1987 season before going to Seattle as coach and executive.

  • John Madden
    John Madden
    Years: 1969-1978. Record: 103-32-7

John Madden was a huge presence on the sideline, loud, forceful, passionate - and a great coach. Madden remains the longest-tenured of all Raiders coaches, serving 10 season from 1969 through 1978, winning103 games, while losing 32 and tying seven. He also led the team to its first Super Bowl victory in 1977.
  • Obit Rauch Football
    John Rauch
    Years: 1966-1968. Record: 33-8-1

Coach John Rauch, right, celebrating with Dave Kocourek (88) after the Raiders beat the Kansas City Chiefs 41-6 to advance to the American Football League championship, led his team to victory in that game before the Raiders lost to the Green Bay Packers in the second Super Bowl.

  • SPORTS FBN-DAVIS-OBIT 29 OX
    Al Davis
    Years: 1963-1965. Record: 23-16-3

Al Davis, speaking with quarterback Cotton Davidson (19) in 1963, took over as coach and put his mark on the team, emphasizing field-stretching long passing and crunching defense. Even after moving to the front office permanently, Davis made sure his impact was felt and coaches knew who was in charge.

  • Eddie Erdelatz
    Eddie Erdelatz
    Years: 1960-1961. Record: 6-10

Eddie Erdelatz was the first head coach of the Oakland Raiders, serving from 1960 to 1961, coaching 16 games and compiling a 6-10 record over one full season and part of a a second. He was the U.S. Naval Academy's head coach for nine seasons before going to the Raiders.
The Raiders have had 17 head coaches in their years in Oakland and Los Angeles, beginning with the team's inception in 1960. One coach, Art Shell, served twice. With the hiring of Dennis Allen - replacing Hue Jackson, who was fired Jan. 10 - another name is added to the roster of men who have led the team, some with great results, others with less-glowing results. Here are photos of Raiders head coaches (Marty Feldman, 1961-62, and Red Conkright, 1962, are missing from the list).
