A 37-year-old man was arrested last week after he allegedly broke into a Rancho Cordova business and, while being apprehended, tried to choke a police dog, according to authorities.
Officers were responding to a suspicious subject call the night of Jan. 5 when they received additional information that the subject was breaking into the Weight Watchers at 3231 Zinfandel Drive, according to a Sacramento County Sheriff's Department report.
(The Sheriff's Department provides police services to the city of Rancho Cordova through contract.)
Officers arrived and saw that the business had been closed at the time of the break-in and that drawers and cabinets had been rifled through, the report states. They then saw the suspect fleeing the scene, and gave chase.
A sheriff's canine responded to help. As the dog tried to apprehend the suspect, the suspect placed the canine in a headlock and choked him.
Officers later took the man, identified as 37-year-old Randy Shaw, into custody on suspicion of burglary and harming a police dog, and a parole hold was placed on him, according to the report.
As for the canine? Ike was not injured and returned to duty.
