Robert Ryan, longtime counsel for Sacramento County, has announced his retirement.
Ryan plans to leave at the end of the fiscal year on June 30.
"His distinguished work on behalf of the people of Sacramento County over the past 25 years, the last 18 as county counsel, has been truly remarkable," Don Nottoli, chairman of the Board of Supervisors, said in a statement. "Bob and his office have been outstanding in their representation and defense of the county's interests, and his sage advice and counsel to the board and county departments have been invaluable."
Ryan is the third top county official to announce his departure in less than a year, following parks director Janet Baker and health director Glennah Trochet. While a county news release offered no explanation for Ryan's departure, Trochet and Baker cited budget problems and other difficulties, as the county is in its fourth straight year of cuts.
After receiving a law degree from Stanford University in 1975, Ryan worked in private practice for a number of years representing government agencies. He was a member of the County Counsel's Board of Directors and many other organizations.
