Midweek storms could bring an end to Sacramento's dry January

Published: Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012 - 11:07 am

If you're rooting for old-fashioned winter-type weather in the Sacramento region, odds are you'll be rewarded by the end of this week, the National Weather Service said today.

Today and on Martin Luther King Day Monday, cold, mostly clear days will continue to dominate the Sacramento region as the first storm from just south of the Gulf of Alaska kisses the region.

"We're getting brushed with a system today and tomorrow," NWS Forecaster George Cline said Sunday. "That won't mean much for the Sacramento area other than it is cooling things off quite a bit. That sets the stage for later in the week."

A series of storms is expected to hit Northern California as the week progresses and should bring the first signs of precipitation over Sacramento starting Tuesday night.

"That storm is coming in very light," Cline said. "Thursday and Friday look more significant."

On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, as much as 2.5 inches of rain could fall along the north coast. The Sacramento region is forecast to receive about 1 to 1.5 inches of rain during that period.

"There are a couple of different shots of moisture coming through," Cline said.

The storms won't be of the frigid polar variety, Cline said, since they will arrive just south of the Gulf of Alaska.

Rather, they'll be slightly warmer - in the 40s, with daytime highs in the 50s. That will be a break from the low-30s chill forecast for tonight in Sacramento.

Here is the NWS detailed forecast:

Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 58. South wind between 9 and 11 mph.

Tonight: Patchy frost after 4am. Otherwise, partly cloudy, with a low around 33. South wind around 6 mph becoming calm.
