The Buzz: Assemblyman Warren Furutani loses bid for Los Angeles City Council

Published: Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012 - 12:00 am | Page 3A

It looks like Assemblyman Warren Furutani will be working with fellow lawmaker Don Wagner awhile longer.

Furutani, D-Gardena, was defeated by Los Angeles Police Department Officer Joe Buscaino in Tuesday's runoff for a vacant Los Angeles City Council seat.

The two Democrats were vying for the 15th Council District seat left open when Democrat Janice Hahn was elected to Congress last year.

Political newcomer Buscaino, a registered Republican until 2010, beat the assemblyman 61 percent to 39 percent.

Furutani and Wagner, an Irvine Republican, got into a tiff last summer over comments some considered offensive to Italian Americans during a legislative debate over the state budget.

Several colleagues wound up separating the two during the last few minutes of the session.

Furutani was first elected to the Assembly during a special election in 2008. He will be termed out in 2014.

As for this year's Assembly races, Furutani has another issue to consider.

He's been drawn into the same district as fellow Assembly Democrat Isadore Hall.

"Due to a technical error, it became public prematurely."
