California's franchised new-car dealers sold 1,290,920 new cars and trucks in 2011, a nearly 10 percent improvement over 2010, according to statistics released today by the Sacramento-based California New Car Dealers Association.

Golden State dealers sold 1,174,110 new vehicles in 2010. All totals include fleet sales.

Honda vehicles had top numbers in two key segments: The Honda Civic was California's best-selling passenger car in 2011 with 37,475 sales. The Honda CR-V was the state's top selling light truck, with 21,863 sold.

Ford's F-Series truck topped full-size pickup sales with 21,792 vehicles sold.

CNCDA projected continued improvement in 2012, forecasting new-vehicle sales of more than 1.4 million statewide this year. That would be a gain of 8.5 percent over 2011.

"California's economy is on the mend, and consumers feel confident again about buying a new car," said John McCallan, CNCDA chairman.
