The Yolo County District Attorney's office announced today that it will not file charges against any of the 10 protesters arrested during a Nov. 18 pepper-spraying incident on the University of California, Davis, campus.
The standoff between campus police and occupy protesters on the campus quad resulted in 10 arrests and a number of demonstrators being pepper-sprayed. Those arrested were cited by campus police with unlawful assembly, illegal camping or both, said Michael Cabral, assistant chief deputy district attorney.
"We didn't feel there was sufficient information to warrant charges," said Michael Cabral, assistant chief deputy district attorney.
The incident began in the early evening as the campus police sought to end the tent occupation of the campus quad. That exchange resulted in the majority of arrests, Cabral said. A number of onlookers encircled the officers and protesters, who had linked their arms together. After numerous verbal warnings, two officers used pepper spray on the seated protesters in an attempt to break the links.
Cabral said the Yolo DA office's investigation into the use of pepper spray in ongoing.
He declined to provide details of the investigation or a timetable for its conclusion. The probe began at the behest of the university chancellors, Cabral said.
